About HIV Nurse Practitioner

The HIV Nurse Practitioner (HNP) program commenced in 2009 under Nurses and Midwifery Council of Zambia and University of Alabama in Birmingham and was housed by Lusaka College of Nursing and Midwifery (LUCON). In 2012 NMCZ handed over the program to University of Zambia (UNZA), School of Medicine and the HNP program shifted to UNZA School of Nursing. Owing to demand of HNPs in the country the College re-commenced the program in 2018. The initial primary focus of this training program was to meet the urgent need for frontline, primary HIV care services in Zambia. The main aim of the programme is to prepare students to become competent HIV Nurse Practitioners who will be able to provide comprehensive care, prevention of HIV infection and treatment and support for patients with HIV and Acquired Immunodeficiency Disease Syndrome (AIDS), including the initiation and management of patients with advanced HIV disease and stable patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART).

The Teaching staff are well qualified and work closely with clinical mentors to enable students acquire competences. Upon completion students are awarded an Advanced Diploma in HNP. Admission requirements in to training are: Diploma in nursing/and or Midwifery

Grade 12 School Certificate or its equivalent with minimum of 5 credits or better with Mathematics, English and any Science as Compulsory Valid NMCZ practicing certificate, Reference from immediate supervisor, Reference from former Nursing/Midwifery Training Institution, Minimum of two years working experience
