About Registered Nursing
The Registered Nursing programme is the oldest at Lusaka College of Nursing, having been established in 1968. It was temporarily closed in 2012 to allow for the introduction of the Registered Nurse-Midwifery programme. However, it was re-opened in January 2020 with an initial intake of 110 students. The training spans a period of three years and leads to the award of a Diploma qualification. This programme is open exclusively to school leavers who have obtained five ‘O’ Level passes at credit level or better.
The overall objective of the programme is to train and graduate nurses who are self-directed, analytical, knowledgeable, skillful, and responsive to challenging situations and emerging diseases. This is aimed at enabling them to contribute effectively towards improving the quality of health care in Zambia.
The training domains of the programme primarily focus on producing competent medical-surgical nurses. However, students also undergo specialty training in areas such as Ophthalmology, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Oncology, Critical Care Nursing in both the Theatre and Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Psychiatric Nursing, Paediatrics Nursing, and Primary Health Care with a rural perspective. In addition to clinical training, students receive intensive instruction in Leadership, Management, and Governance. This component is designed to prepare them for leadership roles by equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to plan, manage, advocate, and mobilize resources for the effective delivery of health care services in both health facilities and the communities they serve. The training faculty consists of highly qualified lecturers and clinical instructors who bring a wealth of experience from both clinical practice and classroom instruction. Their academic credentials include Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees as well as Master’s degrees in various healthcare disciplines such as Public Health, Child Health, Clinical Nursing, and Midwifery, among others. This blend of expertise ensures that students receive well-rounded, evidence-based training grounded in both theory and practice.
